Whats a good rifle that I can by for all around hunting?

I dont want to spend a lot of money though I was thinking of something in a 270Win. or a 270.Wsm? And again the most I'm gonna pay is $650.00. So thanks in advance!Whats a good rifle that I can by for all around hunting?
G'day mate i would go for 308,30 06.7mm.they are all good rifles 7mm is a fastest with 120 fps then the 30 06.and the 30 06 is about 100fps faster than the 308 so there isn't much difference in fps between them.they are all hard hitting guns.I own a 308 but if i lived in the states there are bigger animal there i would go the 7mm.but i will admit our deer and pigs are bigger than yours here in Australia and i use a 308 cal.cheers mateWhats a good rifle that I can by for all around hunting?
The .270 is probably the best all-around rifle for deer sized and smaller out to 300 yards. The Short-mag has a little more power and can get out to around 500 yards with a 5-in MOA.

If you ever intend to go after Elk, Moose or Bear - ya gotta go 30-cal. Either .308 or 30-06. These have the power needed for the big guys but can still be used proficiently for deer and varmints. You can go Rem Model 700 as a time proven model (avoid the 710 %26amp; 770 like the plague though) or try the newer Savages. They are just as accurate and come with a 2-stage adjustable trigger. The Accu-triggers are 'like butta' once you get em set the way you like. And the Savages are a couple hundred less than a 700 Remington.
You can't go wrong with either. I prefer the 270 win ammo is cheaper and more availible. It is one of the most versital cartridges ever developed. The only thing in North America you might not want to go after with a 270 are the larger bears (Though they have been taken with a 270), but if you can afford to go to Alaska to hunt Grizzly Bears you can afford another gun.
For an all-around rifle, you just can't go wrong with a good bolt-action rifle in .30-'06.

The .270 is also a good choice, but in my opinion it is a little light for the really big stuff like moose and the big bears.

The .30-'06 is also a bit light for the really big stuff, but it will get the job done if you are rifleman enough to put the right bullet in the right place.

If your all-around rifle criteria does not include big bears or moose, a .30-'06 bolt-action or a .30-30 lever-gun will take care of 99% of your hunting situations.

Doc
The most bang for the buck is the 308 Win because it is a universal cartridge and also used for NATO. It performs like a 30-06, is acceptable for all big game in the lower 48 - and you can find cheap ammo and surplus military brass. Sometimes you can stumble into free military ammo......... depends on whom you meet at the range.

When I was in the military and issued ammo - once it was issued it could not go back to the armory. I would usually dole out 100 or so rounds to the local civilians at the range shooting next to us.

There certianly are other calibers to consider - but 308 will be least expensive one to own and enjoy using.

Hope this helps.
The 270 is an excellent cartridge, but if your like me and would like a versatile cartridge, .243 is excellent for deer and smaller game. As for best bang for your buck, I would suggest a Tikka rifle, as they are very accurate and priced from 600-700 dollars.

*I am not a Tikka rep, just giving a pertinent answer to a question.
I agree with the other guys that recommend a .30-06, its a much more versatile caliber, not much more recoil, and ammo is more available and with greater ammo selection as well, but the .270 is a fine caliber and you won't be let down if thats what you really want, I like the Rem. 700, Ruger 77, and the Wichester M70 the best, but there are other good rifles as well.
The 270 Winchester is an excellent all around cartridge for hunting.... Its good for white tail deer, coyotes and other medium to smaller critters.....

Avoid the .270 Winchester Short mag.... Sure its nice but its not popular, the ammo is too expensive and its not available on every sport shop shelf... Its always best to stick with more common calibers.... That way if you ever wanted to sell your rifle there will be a larger pool of buyers.....

Consider the Remington 700....

Savage also makes a fine rifle....

I agree with redfred. The .30-06 is a good all around round. You can use sabots for coyote or large rounds for most any North American large game.

Another advantage its a popular round you can find shells at almost any out of the way hardware or sporting store. I remember when my buddy left his 10ga. shot shells at home how much fun it was driving around half the day trying to find shells so we could hunt.
really depends on what you plan to hunt.. all around? 12 gauge. change the load you can hunt small game, deer, turkey, ducks just about anything closer range. longer range again what are you looking for smaller game like varmints or elk. for smaller id say a .223 probably a rem 700 or a savage(cheaper) for larger game .308 something you can be hitting prairie dogs with and knock out a deer maybe a .243.
The .270 Winchester is a good choice, but you might also look at a .30-06. It is available with several weight bullets and loads for just about every game animal in the US. My first choice would be a Remington 700.
the 270. wsm is a really new cartridge and hasn't really proven it self as well as i thought it would but it is still and excellent cartridge. The 270. win would be my first choice

The .270 is a good caliber choice. It is a stellar deer rifle and you should be able to find a quality one for $650.00.

.30-06
Remington 700 in 30-06. It is very versatile, and ammo can be bought in bulk to plink with.

Good Luck
